Maine Ulster Scots Project

The Maine Ulster-Scots Project (MUSP), chaired by John T. Mann, is sponsored by the St. Andrews Society of Maine. It explores the struggle of the Ulster-Scots against religious and governmental persecution, their strong reliance on self and family, and the founding of a radically new independent country.

Ulster-Scots (also called Scots-Irish) have been coming to Maine since before the American Revolution. The hardships of the paths forced upon them have been under-reported; being made essentially invisible by a lack of acknowledgement by the English, they were used as a human buffer against the Indians and the French in their new country of America.

Visit the website of the Maine Ulster-Scots Project for more information. There is also a new MUSP Forum here. This is a very new Forum and I encourage you to visit, log on and join us for discussions on the Maine Ulster-Scots history and genealogy. There are also categories for Canadian Maritime Ulster-Scots. With your help this Forum will become a valuable resource for genealogists and historians researching the Ulster-Scots of Maine.

"Ulster-Scots on the Coast of Maine, Volume 1", a book written by John T. Mann, is available to order by downloading the order form here.

Dianne

The Maine Celtic Celebration

It's never too early to start planning your summer festival schedule. With that in mind, let me remind you to mark these dates on your calendar: July 18, 19, and 20 (2008). These are the days of the second annual Maine Celtic Celebration, held in the beautiful coastal Maine city of Belfast.

Celebrating the cultivation and renewal of the rich Celtic history, culture and hospitality found along the coast of Maine, the festival draws visitors from all around the world. It is a spectacular immersion into the Celtic ( Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Isle of Man, Galicia, Brittany and Asturias ) world of music, dance, athletics and food.

You can find more events like this in the Highland Games Calendar by using the link located at the top of the Links section.

For more information, visit the official site of the Maine Celtic Celebration here.

Holy Tartan Day, Batman! Where Have You Been?

I haven't dropped off the face of the earth; it just looks that way.

Awhile back, after a series of unexpected events, my cardiologist suggested that I take an immediate break from all things that cause stress and anxiety. And by "immediate" he meant "right now, without delay, and promptly." He scared the bejesus out of me.

So I rested. I (tried) to relax. I took care of myself. And now I'm easing back into things.

The first thing I need to do is apologize to everyone I promised to send Tartan Day information to. (I know, I know. That was a poorly constructed sentence. I'm out of practice.). I'm working on getting that information out to all of you.

This most recent development also means that I will not be producing a Tartan Day event in Maine this year.

This certainly should not mean that there won't be any Tartan Day celebrations in Maine. Feel free to gather together and celebrate our heritage and history. Raise a glass. Eat some haggis. Wear your tartan. Raise another glass. Repeat as needed.

It is never too early to begin planning for Tartan Day 2009. One lesson that I've learned extremely well (and with extreme difficulty; I've been told I'm a bit stubborn) recently is that I don't have to do everything myself and that if I just ask, the help will come. So if you want to help with next year's Tartan Day, let me know. I'd love to have you. My email is MaineScot@gmail.com.

I've got some great articles coming up so check back soon.

Slainte,
Dianne
